Annual Report 1895

Annual report, accounts and rental for year end June 1895, showing rents and arrears unchanged since the previous year. Despite the continued low prices for agricultural produce, and a moderate harvest, rents were satisfactorily paid, and Digby notes 'the agitation and discontent prophesied as the inevitable result of the defeat of the Home Rule and Evicted Tenants Bills have been absolutely non existent, and in this district boycotting and intimidation of any kind are almost things of the past.'

Annual Report 1896

Annual report, account and rental for year ending June 1896, showing a slight decrease in overall rent received and a large decrease in arrears, mainly accounted for by the fact that several tenants who were 'hopelessly insolvent' sold their interests in their holdings, and while a portion of the arrears due were deducted from the purchase price, the remainder were abandoned. Describes the estate as uneventful, rents paid on time, a 'complete immunity from agitation of any kind.'

Annual Report 1882

Annual report, accounts and rental for year ending June 1882. Remarking on the 'extraordinary events in Ireland of the last 12 months', Digby reports that consequently there is a large amount of arrears, including abandoned arrears which are mainly the rents of Ballydownan and Roskeen farms which are in Lord Digby's hands having been surrendered.

Land improvements have ceased due to the suspension of rent and the generally disorganised state of the country, a new dwelling house for William Payne, Killeenmore being the chief expenditure. Thirty acres of young plantations in Derrygunnigan and Newtown woods and the maintenance of other young plantations accounted for expenditure in forestry.

Warns that the country is in a 'frightful crisis' and reports on the tactics of the Land League with their 'No Rent' manifesto (Autumn 1881), which was eagerly adopted and led to a complete suspension of the payment of rent. After an abatement was refused, tenantry on the Geashill Estate held a meeting in Killeigh in January 1882 at which a resolution was passed not to pay rent unless abatements were conceded. Proceedings were issued against nine of the principal agitators, their properties seized and put up for public auction in Tullamore. Digby reports that in seven cases, the tenants allowed him to be the purchaser, and in the other two cases, the tenants bought in their farms for the full amount of rent claimed and costs. Evictions followed, five of which required the aid of 'a large force of military and police and bailiffs supplied by the Property Defence Association.'

Annual Report 1915

Annual report, accounts and rental for year end June 1915, in which Digby describes in detail the events surrounding the Geashill Cattle Drive on the grasslands of Ballydownan in November 1914. Describes the bands and banners accompanying the drive, the injuring of several policemen, and the arrest of 46 men who subsequently pleaded guilty at the Winter Assizes in Dublin. Also notes that despite the jailing of the ring-leaders, agitation continued and boycotting and intimidation on the estate were rife. Also notes that inspection of the boundaries of the estate has been completed by the Land Commission but that the final inspection has yet to be made.

Annual Report 1918

Annual report, account and rental for year ending June 1918. Describes a buoyant timber industry for the year with profit made from timber sales on the thinning of woods planted 45 years previously. Describes the country as 'almost entirely free of agitation and disturbance' but notes that 'the attitude of the people as regards the War, where not openly hostile and pro-German is quite apathetic, and this attitude appears to be deliberately encouraged, with scarcely an exception by members of the Nationalist Party and by the Roman Catholic priesthood.'

Annual Report 1920

Annual report addressed to the 11th Baron Digby following the death of his predecessor. Goodbody reports that £7000 has been remitted and briefs the new Lord Digby on the state of Ireland during the War of Independence: 'Ireland continues in a disturbed and unsatisfactory condition. This neighbourhood has not escaped the general destruction of Constabulary barracks, the only three barracks on your estate having been maliciously and wantonly burnt and wrecked, those of Clonmore being wholly destroyed and of Geashill & Killeigh partially so. The police authorities having vacated them prior to their destruction have since surrendered same, with a consequent loss of future rental. Claims for compensation have been lodged for substantial amounts and are still pending.'

Annual Report 1899

Annual report, accounts and rental for year end June 1899 showing a decrease owing to further deductions made on the termination of first statutory terms. Describes the condition of the estate as satisfactory, rents paid on time, crops generally good although prices continue to be low.

Annual Report 1902

Annual report, accounts and rental for year ending 1902, showing a decrease in overall rental income due to the reduction on the termination of the first term of statutory rents. Notes that rents have been satisfactorily paid and that arrears have slightly decreased. Also reports that the general condition of the Estate remains satisfactory and that 'the baneful influence of the United Irish League' has not affected Lord Digby's property.

Annual Report 1907

Annual report, accounts and rental for year ending June 1907, showing a reduction in overall rent received and a slight increase in arrears due. Warns that the future of the estate must be 'prejudicially affected by the general demoralization caused by the apathy shown by the government in dealing with the new form of disorder known as "cattle driving"and by the extraordinary and immoral terms of their proposed legislation dealing with evicted tenants.' Also reports that negotiations with tenants were re-opened on the subject of the sale of the estate but with no definite result as yet.

Annual Report 1871

Annual report and rental for year end June 1871, reporting a favourable financial situation on the estate and outlining the receipts and disbursements for the previous year. Describes the drainage of lands contiguous to the Clodiagh river and the formation of the Clodiagh Embankment, 490 statute perches in length. Also describes the completion of main drains at Derryweelan, Annagharvey and Killellery and notes improvements undertaken in Ballinagar and Ballyduff. In relation to buildings and repairs, he notes that there has been almost complete remodel of old houses and sundry other improvements 'that they might almost be classes as under new buildings.' Also reports that income from woods and plantations is reduced this year due to the 'improper and dishonest conduct of Forester Corbett'. Roskeen, Queen's County, is introduced to the accounts for the first time as an independent estate as Trench cites the differing rental schedules and differing counties as reasons for them not to be amalgamated in the rental.

In general, Trench is pleased not only with the improvements in the houses but also in the habits of the people, the tillage and agriculture and the green crops. On a more personal note, he expresses his 'deep grief' at the decision of his son, T. W. Trench to resign his post as Resident Agent on the Geashill estate. Describes him as 'beloved and respected by the tenantry and looked up to and appreciated by men of all creeds, politics or religions as a man of integrity, honour and intelligence.' Concludes by expressing this confidence that Lord Digby's nephew, Reginald Digby, will be an able successor to his son.
